SCVA: Southern California Vocal Association
SCVA was established in1939 by several prominent LA area choral conductors as an organization tosupport choral conductors and advance vocal music in Southern California. Many early members of SCVA wereschool choral directors in Los Angeles county school districts including LACity Schools (now LAUSD) and districts in Long Beach and the San GabrielValley.
Festivals were one of the originalpurposes for the creation of SCVA and have remained a major part of theorganization throughout its history. SCVA members, led by Howard Swan and Charles Hirt, saw a need to providenon-competitive festivals for choirs and glee clubs where the singers had theopportunity to hear other ensembles in a collegial, educational environment. They established the SCVA festivalsystem that is still in use today: a volunteer festival host schedules a non-competitive festival forchoirs of the same grade level (high school or middle school) and the choirsare evaluated by two certified adjudicators. The festival is designed so thateach choir hears the performances of all the other choirs.
In 1955, it was reported that SCVAsponsored 25 choral festivals; festivals at that time usually had 10 choirsenrolled. In 1959, more than 35,000 singers participated infestivals.” To ensure thequality of music sung at the festivals, SCVA started the Festival Music List.At that time two of the three pieces sung by a choir were required to come fromthe SCVA Festival Music List.
In the mid 1990s a system forrating choirs was established and implemented. The system assigned a rating (superior, excellent, good)based on the average score of the letter grades from both adjudicators. Tomatch the festival practices of other organizations, festival certificates werereplaced with festival plaques at this time. The scoring system wasadjusted in 2000 to have more rigorous standards, and in 2005 to correct ascoring omission.SCVA continues to be the primarysponsor of choral festivals in southern California. In 2009, SCVA organized 39choral festivals that were attended by approximately 70% of the SCVA membershipwith an estimated 9,000 students. Online festival host registration and onlinefestival evaluations were implemented during the year.
In 2010, there were 45 SCVAfestivals for middle school and high school concert choirs, as well as specializedfestivals for show choirs and vocal jazz. SCVA continues to offer annual adjudicator certification workshops. -
ACDA: American Choral Directors Association
Founded in 1959, the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) is a nonprofit music-education organization whose central purpose is to promote excellence in choral music through performance, composition, publication, research, and teaching. In addition, ACDA strives through arts advocacy to elevate choral music's position in American society.
ACDA membership consists of choral directors who represent more than one million singers across the United States. ACDA members teach choral music in public and private schools - kindergarten through senior high school - and at the college and university levels. They conduct a variety of choral groups, including boychoirs, children's choirs, men's and women's choruses, junior and senior high school choirs, college and university choruses, ethnic choirs, vocal-jazz ensembles, and symphony choruses. They also conduct choirs in their communities and in their places of worship. Membership is established by submitting a membership application and annual dues.
ACDA offers conferences at the State, Division, and National levels. National conferences are offered in March of odd-numbered years; the seven Division conferences take place in February and March of even-numbered years. Through concert performances by accomplished choirs, educational clinics by leading experts, and exhibits by music-industry representatives, ACDA offers its members a diverse and practical forum in which to develop their skills and professional knowledge

MENC: National Association for Music Education
MENC: The National Association for Music Education, among the world's largest arts education organizations, marked its centennial in 2007 as the only association that addresses all aspects of music education. Through membership of more than 75,000 active, retired, and pre-service music teachers, and with 60,000 honor students and supporters, MENC serves millions of students nationwide through activities at all teaching levels, from preschool to graduate school.
Since 1907, MENC has worked to ensure that every student has access to a well-balanced, comprehensive, and high-quality program of music instruction taught by qualified teachers. MENC's activities and resources have been largely responsible for the establishment of music education as a profession, for the promotion and guidance of music study as an integral part of the school curriculum, and for the development of the National Standards for Arts Education. MENC is located at the National Center for Music Education in Reston, VA.
Why Doesn't MENC's Name Match the Acronym?
We were originally called Music Supervisors National Conference, then Music Educators National Conference. (That's what the "MENC" stands for.) In 1998, our National Executive Board voted to change our name to MENC: The National Association for Music Education to better reflect our mission.
