Emotion Management for Kids
Emotions are very powerful for everybody but for kids especially. Currently this year the school counseling program has implemented lessons in emotion management for grades 2nd -4th grade. Today’s newsletter will focus on some of the main points of the lesson and hopefully can serve as a set of talking points you can use with your children regarding emotions and strong feelings.
OCTOBER is... Bully Prevention Month
Some Quick facts:
More than one out of every five (20.8%) students report being bullied (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2016).
64% of children who were bullied did not report it; only 36% reported the bullying (Petrosina, Guckenburg, DeVoe, & Hanson, 2010).
More than half of bullying situations (57%) stop when a peer intervenes on behalf of the student being bullied (Hawkins, Pepler, & Craig, 2001).
School-based bullying prevention programs decrease bullying by up to 25% (McCallion & Feder, 2013).
What is Avaxat Doing?
During the month of September and October, the school counselor has been visiting our 3rd through 5th grade classes and teaching about how to stop bullying through learning the skills of Recognizing, Reporting and Refusing bullying. They learned about the role they can play in bully prevention even if it is not happening to them. As a parent, this month is a time to talk to your children about bullying and how to respond.
Where Can I Learn More?
After about every lesson you can find a short recap of the topic on my website. Currently, you can find recaps on following topics by visiting the school counselor website (https:// www.murrieta.k12.ca.us/Page/32549).
Bully Prevention for 4th and 5th grade (3rd grade coming soon),
Skills for Learning for kindergarten and 1st grade Empathy Training for 2nd grade
All lessons are delivered or supervised by Felipe Zanartu, Avaxat’s school counselor. Some lessons may have been delivered by our school counselor intern Jasmine, Caoile. If you have any questions fee free to email email@example.com.
Dear Parents and Students,
Military Family Appreciation Month was established in 1993 by the Armed Services YMCA. The U.S. Government
has recognized the occasion every year since. Throughout the month of November, community leaders and businesses
are teaming up to recognize families through a variety of activities and events to express their appreciation
and thanks to our military families. We are so grateful for our Avaxat service members and families for
their selflessness and willingness to serve our country honor and courage. As a counselor and a community member,
I want to acknowledge the challenges that military families face. The Avaxat counseling program is dedicated
to supporting our military students who may be facing difficulties related to military life, deployment, and relocation.
The Avaxat counseling program has officially been in every general education classroom 5 times this year teaching
your children lessons in character education, empathy and social skills. This month in grades 3 and 4, we focused
on the social skills on topics such as being prepared for class, using self-talk and using empathy. Students
learned how to create plans can help them to be better learners, respond to criticism, and ignore distractions
that may get in the way of learning. These skills assist students in demonstrating respect for their teachers as
well as improving their educational experience itself.
Last week Avaxat debuted our video morning announcements program which features our 5th grade student leaders
sharing the events of the week, our weekly mindset message and our ongoing teaching of our social skill of the
week. To view the announcements simply go to the Avaxat main page or you can type in this short link: goo.gl/
As we roll in to the month of November, the counselor will be initiating small groups to further support students
who need more as well as drop by the classroom to give follow-up lessons on emotion management and problem
solving. If you fee
