You will find the Curriculum Standards for Second Grade as set forth by the state of California on the second grade website. These have been recognized as the key standards that your child needs to master by the end of second grade in order to ensure continued success in the third grade. Second grade students are assessed at various times throughout the year to measure how well your child is performing towards meeting the Grade Level Standards. The first set of Language Arts/Math assessments will be shared with you in October during parent teacher conference time.
Progress Reports and Report Cards
Your child will receive either a progress report or report card every quarter during the school year. These are designed to let you know how your child is progressing towards our Grade Level Standards.
The Report Cards are standards-driven. This means that your child is graded each grading period on how well he or she is performing towards the California State Standards that are designed and intended to be mastered by June.
In our classroom, I will be assessing students at the end of each story, theme, as well as at the end of math chapters and unit. These assessments allow me to see if your child is understanding the concepts being taught daily, as well as for me to see what areas need review and re teaching. Tests will be sent home for your review. Please take a moment to look over your child’s work with them. Make sure to discuss mistakes as well as celebrate success. Sign the form so that I know you saw them, and indicate whether or not you would like a conference. You may keep the tests at home.
Library/ Computer Lab
Our class will be visiting the school library once a week as well as the computer lab. Your child will be able to check out books weekly as long as they remember to return their books from the week prior. In the computer lab, we will be working on IRead our phonics program and as well MobyMax, and Raz-Kids.
Students will be recognized at school assemblies for Academic achievement, exceptional citizenship, noticeable improvement, and exemplary character. You will be notified ahead of time if your child is receiving an award. Every student will receive an award this year however, some will have to wait longer than others because they cannot all receive awards the first month. Please be patient.
There are many ways that parents can help. One way is by volunteering their time to our classroom. We may need parents to help with small group activities for both Reading and math, and PTA Rep/Room Mom. It is most helpful if volunteers are able to come on a regular basis. This way we can be sure to have something ready for you to help with. Parents can also be helpful by taking things home to cut out, or prepare for upcoming activities. As the need for volunteers arises, and once we are settled into a routine (October)we will be contacting those who were interested in helping out.
Communication is the key to a successful year for all of us. Please check your child’s folder daily for any notes from the teacher. Also, feel free to write any notes in the parent/teacher communication portion of the folder. We will be checking it daily. The best way to reach us is by email. Email addresses can be found on the second grade website. Remember that we are a team to ensure the most successful year for your child.
