Board of Education

The Board of Education serves as the governing body of the Murrieta Valley Unified School District. It is composed of five elected members, each serving a four-year term. Board Members are elected by Trustee Areas, which were established in 2018 and updated in 2022 based on U.S. Census Data.

The legal requirement to serve as a Board member are limited to being registered to vote and residing within the assigned Trustee Area.

Meetings

The Board of Education meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 5:00 p.m. at the District Support Center, located at 41870 McAlby Court, unless otherwise posted. Special Board meetings may be scheduled as needed to address specific matters.

Board meeting agendas are posted at the District Support Center near the front entrance and online at least 72 hours prior to each regular meeting.

Agendas for Special Board meetings are posted at least 24 hours in advance.

Individuals wishing to speak to a board member may do so via their district issued emails or as a written public comment on. any item listed on the meeting agenda.

Select the Public Comments link/tab on the agenda item.
Enter your comment in the designated field.

Written comments submitted through the online agenda will be provided to the Board prior to the meeting.

In Person

Individuals wishing to address the Board on any board meeting agenda item—or on matters within the Board’s jurisdiction during a regular meeting—must complete a Request to Address the Board of Education card. Cards are available at the Boardroom entrance. Completed cards should be submitted to District staff prior to the start of the meeting. Speakers will be recognized by the presiding officer at the designated time on the agenda. In accordance with Board Bylaw 9323:

Individual speakers are allowed up to three (3) minutes per agenda or non-agenda item.
Total public input on any single item is limited to 20 minutes.

The primary responsibilities of the Board of Education include:

Setting district policy

Establishing district goals

Ensuring that the district is compliant with Federal, State, and local requirements

Approving a budget that prioritizes the established goals and maintaining contractual relationships with the Murrieta Educators Association and the California School Employees Association.

Authority is vested in the board as a collective body, not individual members. Board members fulfill their responsibilities by working together as a governance team with the Superintendent to make decisions in the best interest of all the students in the community.

The Board of Education appoints the Superintendent of Schools, who serves as the District's Chief Executive Officer. The Superintendent also acts as the Secretary to the Board of Education and is responsible for preparing Board agendas and maintaining official Board records and files.
