District Facts

Education in Murrieta Valley is rooted in a proud tradition that began in 1885, when one teacher and fourteen students gathered in a modest one-room schoolhouse on 2nd Street, built by local pioneer Daniel Buchanan.

That humble beginning ignited a commitment to learning that continues to shape our community today. In honor of this legacy, Buchanan Elementary School opened in 2001, carrying forward the spirit of curiosity, connection, and opportunity that defined Murrieta’s first classroom.

A defining chapter in our history unfolded in 1989, when the community came together to unify Murrieta’s schools into a single K–12 district. With the passage of Measure P and a $38.5 million bond to construct Murrieta Valley High School, the Murrieta Valley Unified School District (MVUSD) was officially formed. At the time, the district served just over 1,000 students. Today, MVUSD proudly supports approximately 21,700 students and their families each year, continuously growing and adjusting alongside the community we serve.
