    Welcome to United States History!  This year promises to be one unlike any other that you've ever experienced! 
    that we'll learn will be based on two major concepts...  
    "Perceptions and Change!" autumn     autumn    
    The way which we see the world and those around us varies from person to person, country to country.  We will closely examine several of different periods and see how each effected life for people then, as well as life for people today.
    1. Course of Study   Students in grade 10 study major turning points that shaped the modern world from the late 18th century through the present, including the cause  and course of the two world wars.  Tracing the rise of democratic ideas and developing an understanding of the historical roots of current world issues, especially as the pertain to international relations,  They extrapolate for the American experience that Democratic ideals are often achieved at a high price, remain vulnerable, and are not practiced everywhere in the world.  In other words, freedom is not free!  Students develop an understanding of current world issues and relate them to their historical, geographic, political, economic. and cultural contexts.  Students consider multiple accounts of events in order to understand international relations from a variety of perspectives. 
    2. Course Description    This world that we live in is largely because of one vital element...The People!  Who they are, what they do and why are all elements that have been instrumental in the world evolving into what it has become today.  This year we will learn about the history of the modern world by studying the lives and people and works of individuals ranging from Aristotle to Mikhail Gorbachev, and important events that span from the Enlightenment to the fall of Communism.  We live in a uniquely global society that is connected through high speed technology, but the differences and issues that have separated people for centuries still exist.  The manner in which we follow this course as well as the "adventures we encounter along the way promise to leave a lasting impression on the minds of those who dare to undertake this challenge.   The student will study the following topics curing each semester:

    Additionally, www.mrdowling.com, www.unitedstreaming.com  and www.hiphugheshistory.com are three of the core websites that will be indispensable to our learning success. Further, there are  supplemental videos downloaded from the unitedstreaming  website and uploaded to our Modern World History website to supplement the lessons presented in class. You can view them at your leisure, and they should prove to be very instrumental in enhancing your understanding of the lessons.  Simply (a) Choose the Modern World History selection, (b) click "Videos" and (c) click on the specific video you want to watch. HipHuges History****on www.YouTube.com is an equally invaluable alternative.  Simply type in the subject matter you want to view and take advantage of the gold mine at your disposal!!! ato earning a ticket to the show!!!

    3. Grading Policy
    Students grades are determined by 5 basic elements - a. Class participation, b. Homework assignments, c. Quizzes ( announced and unannounced), d. Tests, e. Projects and papers.  The following information provides the grading scale that will be used for this class:                   
    100... A+                 95-99...A                      90-94...A-
    88-89...B+               85-87...B                      80-84...B-
    78-79... C+              75-77...C                     70-74...C-
    68-69...D+               65-67...D                     60-64..D- 
                                     Below 60...F     
    Those students who manage to maintain an overall average of 93% or higher by the end of the 16th week of the semester (95% 2nd semester) will have earned "A Ticket To The Show (***T3S***)... the privilege of being exonerated from the semester final exam.  Additionally, a grade of 90% will be entered into the students overall record.   ON QUE (Optimizing Opportunities Now Necessitates Quality Querying Uniquely Undertaking Educational Excellence), formerly "RISE UP"  is an opportunity for self improvement, and will be MANDATORY  for all students with an average below 75%!!!  Students that are aware that they may miss a RISE UP session can make arrangements to schedule an alternate session prior to the day of the scheduled test/quiz.  Sending email notification on the day of such absences is also required.  Failure to attend RISE UP without having secured prior approval from Mr. Gainer (not including absences) can result in disciplinary action to include detention.  
    4. Attendance Policy -    Each class session begins promptly when the bell rings.  On time is considered as being in your assigned seat (preferably), but without both feet on the interior of the classroom.  Late is a four letter word and unless otherwise excused will be dealt with accordingly. To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late, and to be late is to be all jacked up!!! ...enough said!!    
    5. Make Up Work   -  Whenever a student is absent it is the responsibility of that student to ensure that all missed assignments are made up in a timely manner. One day is allowed for time to make up missed work each day absent.  I will provide whatever assistance necessary to help the students success, but the bottom line is that their success is their responsibility.
    6. Class Calendar - Assignments, due dates will be posted on the class calendar. Every effort will be made to keep it current, so that students can plan accordingly. In the case of absences, students will be able to refer to the calendar to remain on par with the rest of the class.
    7. Mandatory Equipment.   Each student required to have the following items in order to successfully function at a high level proficiency in our class:
    a.  blue/ black ink pens
    b. pencils
    c. hi lighters
    d. spiral notebook.  
    Phones will be turned off and stored in students' backpacks until the end of the period.  Failure to adhere to this policy will result in students' phone being confiscated.  There will be specific lessons that phone use will be specified.  Other occasions/requests must be cleared by Mr. Gainer first.    
    ***The following two thoughts deserve to be pondered and clung to like a vice grip!!
    a. We cannot become who we can be or want to be by remaining who we are, therefore we must...

         Music has a way of really reaching the inner most sanctum of who we really are. "U Turn",a song by the group Take 6 does the best job possible at helping the students to realize the value of our two pillars, perceptions and change. This song will also be the basis for one of the primary projects that you will complete. Being as insightful, creative and personal as possible, your challenge is to: 
    aInterpret the lyrics in the three stanzas focusing on how they reflect the true essence of perceptions and change.
    b.  Include a minimum of one personal example that clearly demonstrates how these lyrics have impacted your personal life either currently or in the past.
    c. Include a minimum of one illustration per stanza that best portrays what you intended to convey in your interpretation.

    This ad from Gatorade shows that winning doesn't come easy. It takes a lot of hard work, but it's worth it. The advertisement begins with people getting up very early in the morning to go running, lift weights, do pushups, jumping rope, on the basketball court, on the tennis court, on the baseball field, on the football field, in the boxing ring, on the soccer field - and of course drinking Gatorade and using Gatorade products to refresh and replenish themselves before, during, and after their workouts.
