At Our District, we are committed to making every moment matter by providing engaging opportunities and exceptional academic instruction. Consistent, on-time attendance is essential for every student, from Transitional Kindergarten (TK) through 12th grade.

The most effective way families can support student success is by ensuring their children attend school every day and arrive on time. We’re doing our part to encourage student success with strategies designed to promote strong attendance and student engagement.

Why Arriving at School On-Time Matters. Every Second Counts!

Arriving late at school disrupts the start of the school day, prevents students from eating breakfast at school and dampers the tone for daily success. Students arriving late counts toward unexcused absence totals, each minute missed counts toward unexcused absences.

To help your student succeed, make sure they arrive before start time, and they stay through the entire school day. If transportation is an issue, please call our transportation department about school bus eligibility and options.

Types of Absences

Excused Absence

Valid reasons (according to CA state educational law) for a student to be absent from school are called excused absences. Examples of an excused absence are:

Student illness or injury
Doctor or dental appointments that cannot be scheduled before or after school hours
Funeral services for an immediate family member
For justifiable personal reasons (including appearance in court, observance of a holiday or ceremony of the student’s religion, attendance at religious retreats, attendance at an employment conference or attendance at an educational conference on the legislative or judicial process offered by a nonprofit organization)

Unexcused Absence

An unexcused absence is when your student misses school for reasons not included in Ed Code 48205. Some examples of unexcused absences are:

Running errands for family
Babysitting
Transportation problems
Vacations or trips
Family emergency
Inclement weather
Sleeping too late
Unverified absence (no reason provided)
“Take Your Child to Work” Day (without advance administration approval)
Extended funeral absences (without advance administration approval)
Unexcused absence post-SART or SARB contract

When is Sick Too Sick for School?

Typically, a student is considered too sick for school if they have a fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, vomiting, or diarrhea and have taken symptoms reducing medication with 24 hours of school. Other signs include a persistent cough, a widespread rash, or symptoms that prevent them from participating in normal activities.

Report An Absence

Reporting an Absence

If your student is absent or expected to be absent, a parent or guardian must notify the school’s attendance office.

To report an absence:

Call or email your school’s office before or on the morning of absence.
Be sure to include:
Student’s full name
Student ID number
Grade level
Reason for the absence

We also recommend notifying your student’s teacher(s) directly. This helps ensure your child receives any missed assignments and stays on track with classwork. Students in grades 6-12 can access their homework, assignments or class discussions on Canvas.
