Health Services

California Education Code 49403 requires parent9s)/guardian(s) to provide current home, work, and emergency contact phone numbers, as well as relevant student health information, including medical conditions and medications. This information allows school staff to properly care for students and to contact parents promptly if a student becomes ill or injured. Health information is confidential and shared only with staff on a need-to-know basis, according to the Ed Code and FERPA.

If a student becomes ill or injured and the school is unable to reach a parent or local emergency contact, the school may be required to call 911 for medical treatment. Any resulting costs are the responsibility of the parent/guardian.

Emergency Contacts and Student Pick-Up

Please list at least two to three local emergency contacts who are authorized to care for your student if you are unavailable.

• Students should be picked up within 15–30 minutes after a call from the Health Office.
• Emergency contacts may not authorize someone other than those listed on the emergency list to pick up a student.

Each student who is required to take medication at school must have written parent and physician permission on file, as well as provide the medication to the health office in the original, labeled container.  Click here for more information about taking medication at school.

If a student is injured during the school day, they may visit the Health Office. When appropriate, ice will be provided to help manage the injury.

• For minor, same-day injuries, students may be allowed to take ice back to class if it is determined they can remain in school. This helps minimize time away from instruction.
• For pre-existing or “old” injuries (those that did not occur that day), students may return to the Health Office during break or lunch to apply ice. Ice is generally not provided during class time for old injuries.

This approach helps ensure student care while  minimizing the loss of instructional time.

The following guidelines help determine when a student should remain at home or be picked up from school. This list is not a complete one all be all, other conditions may require a student to be sent home. Students should stay at home or may need to be picked up if they experience:

• Fever of 100.4°F or higher
• Significant respiratory symptoms, such as repeated coughing, wheezing, or other concerning upper respiratory issues
• Rash of unknown origin, especially if widespread or accompanied by a fever
• Suspected conjunctivitis (pink eye), including red, itchy eyes with discharge or inflamed conjunctiva
• Contagious conditions, such as untreated ringworm, impetigo, or similar illnesses
• Vomiting and/or diarrhea accompanied by fever or malaise, or more than one episode
• Suspected fractures, unless it is a minor injury (such as a finger) and the parent requests the student remain at school
• Obvious displaced fractures or injuries causing significant discomfort require immediate pick-up
• Head injuries involving loss of consciousness (even briefly), severe headache, or visual disturbances (otherwise, 911 will be called)
• Deep or large cuts or gashes, especially if underlying structures are visible or bleeding cannot be controlled within five minutes
