Student of the Month-September

The Student of the Month Program honored five accomplished college-bound senior students on Thursday, September 12, 2018.  The students were selected by their teachers for their character, integrity, love of learning, ability to persevere during challenging circumstances, community service and how they make a difference on their high school campus. 

The students and their families attended a breakfast sponsored by numerous local businesses.  Principals and teachers from each high school shared stories about each of the students and students received numerous gift certificates from community businesses along with certificates of recognition, congratulations and encouragement from local, county, and state n dignitaries.

  • Vista Murrieta High School Senior Kelsey Waite is an outstanding student who is the epitome of Vista CLASS-Character, Leadership, Attitude, Scholarship and Service. She has an overall GPA of 4.35 and is the ASB President, as well as the Varsity Dance Captain, and a member of the Varsity Lacrosse team. Kelsey plans to attend Stanford or University of Colorado, Boulder as a bio-chem student. Kelsey is dedicated to service and plans to continue the service she began in Haiti during the summer of 2018. Academically, Kelsey is a member of the National Honor Society and California Scholarship Federation.


  • Murrieta Mesa High School Senior Carcie Chappell is a motivated member of the Lacrosse team who has proven her dedication, leadership, and work ethic. In addition to Lacrosse, she is editor-in-chief of the Mesa yearbook, a member of the soccer team and the football team as the kicker. Her kind and positive demeanor raises the environment she is in, whether it be a classroom or a field. After high school, Carcie plans on continuing her dedication to athletics and service by coaching a youth lacrosse team or faith-based youth group. Her goal is to attend an out of state university where she can study engineering with an emphasis in robotics or mechanics.   


  • Calvary Murrieta Christian High’s student of the month is senior Minji Hong. Minji a 4.28 GPA international student from South Korea has emulates kindness, generosity and spirit of Calvary Murrieta’s mission. She has overcome several obstacles as an international student and has exceled in eight years from learning English to taking multiple AP classes. Minji plans on attending Biola or Azuza Pacific University and major in nursing. Upon completion, her goal is serve around the world as a missionary.  


  • Makenna Blackman from River Springs Charter is described as a courageous and kind life-long learner who is thoughtful and motivated to succeed. Makenna has a 3.79 GPA and like the other Student of the Month scholars, has a passion to serve the world. In summer of 2018, Makenna went on a mission trip to Ghana where she gained an appreciation for the simple things in life. After high school, she plans on studying journalism and writing the truth about world issues and humanitarian needs. Makenna is full of promise and potential and she has an excellent future ahead!


  • Student Body Vice President, IB Diploma student, and Virtual Enterprise team Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Grant Castaneda is the Murrieta Valley High School’s Student of the Month. Of the many accolades Grant earned, he is most proud of the second-place award his team won at the Virtual Enterprise International Youth Business Summit, Business Plan category. Like many high achieving students, Grant brings a positive vibe to the campus that percolates throughout the student body. His kind, thoughtful, hard-working personality epitomizes the Nighthawk spirit of doing things the R.I.T.E. way, with Respect, Integrity, Teamwork and Excellence. After high school, Grant plans on pursuing a degree in pre-med then completing medical school to become a pediatric surgeon.


Each student recognized will compete for the honor of the Student of the Year in June when 10 students will receive college scholarship upwards of $1,000 to the college, university or trade school of their choice.  If you wish to learn more about the Student of the Month Program, please contact Sally A.
