Protecting Student Health During Poor Air Quality & Heat

Murrieta Valley Unified School District (MVUSD) is committed to safeguarding the health and well-being of our students, families, and staff. We recognize the importance of balancing educational continuity with health and safety, especially during periods of poor air quality caused by fires, pollution, or extreme heat.

We actively monitor local air conditions using the Air Quality Index (AQI), a tool that measures pollution levels and their potential health impacts. Our trusted resources used to guide us during extreme heat and inclement weather are AirNow, Perry Weather, and guidance from local health authorities.

By closely tracking AQI and heat readings, we can take proactive steps to protect our school community, including:

·      Modifying or moving outdoor activities indoors

·      Adjusting schedules

·      Providing additional support for sensitive groups

Outdoor Activity – WBGT Readings

Important: Perry Weather Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) readings shown in the charts below are not basic air temperatures. WBGT accounts for humidity, solar radiation, and wind speed, providing a more accurate measure of potential heat stress.

How to Use the WBGT Charts:

1.     Locate the Perry Weather, WBGT chart closest to your student’s school.

2.     Check the MVUSD Outdoor Activity Guideline Chart to see what activities are allowed for the current WBGT reading.

Schools must act within 30 minutes of receiving an alert that requires changes
