A = France
B = England - Angleterre
C = Holland – Le Pays Bas; they speak Dutch;
traditionally wear clogs; very marshy; use windmills to get water and grind
wheat into flour; almost all below sea level; keep from flooding by dams
(dykes);
D = Belgium - La Belgique
E = Luxembourg - Luxembourg; smallest country
in the world;
F = Germany - Allemagne; Holland Belgium and
Luxembourg all border Germanic countries; the three were countries with
fluctuating rulers (French/German); mixture of French and German culture
G = La Suisse - Switzerland; 3 official languages:
French, Italian, and German; great skiing; good watches and clocks; popular
banks due to the fact that Switzerland is a neutral country; have good
cheese; good chocolate and pastries;
H = Italy- Italie; looks like a boot; tomato
pies (pizza); The Vatican City is the home of the Pope; predominately Catholic;
Rome; a GREAT deal of history
I = Spain- Espagne
J = Mediterranean Sea- La mer Méditerranée;
very important for transportation to the Orient.
Atlantic Ocean- Atlantique; touches USA;
The English Channel- La Manche; very important
for transportation to England and access to the Atlantic.
La mer du Nord- the North Sea
French Cities:
1. Lille - On the border of a Germanic country;
a lot of German architecture and culture mixed with French
2. Paris - Capitol of France and the largest
city in France; called “The City of Light;” They say that all roads run
through Paris
3. Cherbourg - on the coast of La Manche;
very important seaport for trade with England and many other countries;
4. Brest - a city that is very modern
today; used to have tons of forest; In WWII, Germans burned down the forests
and leveled all of the city except for the Chateau;
5. Nantes - picture postcard city; picturesque;
close to the ocean so had much money due to shipping
6. Tours – famous for castles; Kings would come
here to vacation, and to go hunting
7. Dijon – In the region of Burgundy, it is
famous for wine and mustard. Also the architecture is very distinctive
with colorful tile roofs. Temecula’s Tower Plaza was modeled after
a city in Burgundy.
8. Strasbourg = Very strong German influence
in it’s culture and architecture.
9. Annecy/Megève = ski resorts in the
French Alps. The Alps are the largest mountain range in Europe.
10. Lyon = Beautiful and industrial because
of situation on the river
11. Grenoble = Another beautiful ski resort
in the French Alps, very close to Switzerland.
12. Nice/Cannes/Monte Carlo/Monaco = Cities
on the Cote d’Azur (The French Riviera) Very famous for it’s beautiful
beaches. Also known for mardi gras clelbrations and film festival.
Formerly the summer vacation spot for the Romans.
13. Toulouse = Nestled in the foothills of the
Pyramese mountains, the beautiful, red Spanish tile roofs are very pretty
in this valley of green.
14. Bordeaux = Famous for deep red bordeaux
wine and for the Chocolat
15. Le Havre = A port town for transport of
merchandise as well as people.
