Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Who can enroll at Learn@Home?
Learn@Home offers two instructional programs:
-
Parent-Led Program (Homeschooling Option): Designed for K-5 students, this program requires significant parent involvement, especially in the early grades. As students grow older, it suits those who are independent, organized, and able to stay on track with minimal support. Parents will still need to ensure that students complete their lessons and make academic progress.
-
Teacher-Led Program (Virtual/Blended Option): This program is available for 6-8 students and combines virtual and blended learning approaches.
Eligibility:
- Our program is open to families in Murrieta and surrounding communities within Riverside and adjacent counties.
- Families outside our district boundaries must secure an inter-district transfer from their designated school district.
Is Learn@Home a Charter School?
No, the Learn@Home program is not a charter school. It is a personalized program operated within the Murrieta Valley Unified School District. This program is designed for families who prefer a non-traditional and flexible instructional model to meet their student's needs.
Is this similar to Distance Learning or Virtual Learning?
No, the Learn@Home program is not the same as the Distance Learning or Virtual Learning models used during the pandemic. While there are some virtual components, such as teacher meetings and access to virtual modules, parents are the primary instructors using the Murrieta Valley USD provided curriculum.
New state guidance may require students to participate in some direct instruction from our Partner Teachers daily, depending on the grade level. More information will be provided as these requirements are clarified.
Can my child with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) access this program?
Yes, students with an IEP can access the Learn@Home program. Before enrollment, an IEP meeting will be held to consider a change of placement into the home-based learning program that best meets the student's needs. Services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, and psychological counseling may still be provided based on the student's offer of FAPE within the recommended change of placement.
What options are available for switching back to on-site schooling if I enroll my child in the Learn@Home program? Is there a year-long commitment, or can they switch back easily if it doesn't work out?
The Learn@Home program is optional and voluntary. Parents can choose to return their child to a traditional schooling model at any time if their family circumstances or student needs change, provided that county safety guidelines allow it.
Key Points:
- If the designated or resident school is at capacity, your child may be offered an alternate site until space becomes available.
- There is no long-term commitment to remain in the Learn@Home program.
- The program administrator may recommend switching back to a traditional model if the student is not meeting work completion requirements, making adequate academic progress, or adhering to the master/learning agreement.
Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions!
Does Murrieta Valley USD Provide activity stipends to Learn@Home participants?
No, Murreita Valley USD does not provide activity stipends to students or families participating in the Learn@Home program. According to Ed Code Section 51747.3(a), as a Local Educational Agency (LEA), we are prohibited from offering any funds or other things of value to students or their parents/guardians that are not also provided to those attending regular classes.
What if a child is NOT vaccinated?
Our Learn@Home program operates under Independent Study Ed. Code guidelines, which state that students in this program who do not receive classroom-based instruction are not subject to immunization requirements.
However, while immunization requirements are not in effect for Independent Study students, we will still request and document immunization records at the time of enrollment, as per SB 277.
Please note - Immunizations are required for students who wish to participate in school activities such as award assemblies, special guest events, school plays, field trips, or other group activities.
Is the Learn@Home Program available to families outside district boundaries?
Yes, families residing outside our district boundaries can enroll in the Learn@Home program. To do so, you will need to secure an inter-district transfer from your designated school district. Please contact our office for guidance on how to begin. Enrollment can start once the inter-district transfer is secured from the releasing district and approved by Murrieta Valley USD.
Will Testing/Assessments be completed if my child is enrolled in Learn@Home?
Yes, some ongoing testing can be completed at home under your supervision. To ensure consistent academic progress monitoring, our Partner Teachers will also proctor some tests and assessments. Additionally, students enrolled in Learn@Home are required to participate in the same state assessments as those offered to students in traditional schooling.
Is there flexibility in the core curriculum accessed through Learn@Home?
Yes, Learn@Home students will receive the same curriculum as those in traditional programs. Additionally, they will have access to online supplemental programs available to all district students of the same grade level. This instructional method allows students to complete courses at their own pace—either accelerated for advanced learners or with additional support and practice for those who need it. District-adopted curriculum from other programs may also be used if it better meets your student's needs.
What school calendar does the Learn@Home Program follow?
The Learn@Home program follows the same district calendar. You can view and access the calendar here.
