History of Alternative Education in Murrieta

Creekside High School opened  in August 1998.  In 1999, the District started an independent study program for students who needed something other than a traditional classroom setting. By the end of the 2002/03 school year, the demand for the independent study program had grown to the point where there was a waiting list of students. Tenaja Canyon Academy opened in 2003.

As the alternative education programs grew to meet the various needs of individual students and families from grades 1-12, district staff proposed merging Creekside High School with Tenaja Canyon Academy.  On June 23, the Board of Education approved the merger and renaming of the alternative education program to Murrieta Canyon Academy.
