    Description of Campus

    Buchanan Elementary School serves students in Transitional Kindergarten through Grade Five. The school has 54 classrooms, a multipurpose room with a kitchen, library, cafeteria, an outdoor eating area, amphitheater, administrative offices, a health office, teacher workrooms, and two play areas, one for TK/kindergarten students and one designated for students in grades 1-5. Child care facilities for students in grades TK-5 are located on campus in a separate room. The school site is also home to a State Pre-School program.

    Year School Opened

    The school opened in August 2001 as the eighth elementary school in the Murrieta Valley Unified School District.

    Instructional Goals/Program

    Buchanan Elementary School’s primary curricular goal is to provide students with a standards-based curriculum that is presented in a meaningful and nurturing environment. Buchanan Elementary is committed to working in collaborative teams to build a school of high performance learning that fosters personal accountability. Within teaching the academic standards, we aim to instill high moral standards. We strive to provide a curriculum that promotes inquiry and discovery, and challenges students to rise to their highest potential.

    Who is Daniel Buchanan?

    Daniel Buchanan was a pioneer who settled in the Murrieta Valley in the late 1800’s. He built the first elementary school that served the children of the local ranchers and farmers. On opening day in 1885, that first school enrolled approximately twenty-five students.

    The school colors are dark slate blue and tan. 

    What is the school mascot?

    The school's mascot is the Buchanan Blazers (Trailblazers).

    Buchanan graduates will be highly enthusiastic, highly proficient self-directed learners.     Staff, families, and our entire community will be partners, actively working in a collaborative manner for the benefit of each child's education. We will ensure an environment in which everyone is valued and treated with dignity and respect. Everyone will assume responsibility for the success of the school community. Buchanan administrators will be visionaries who demonstrate strong leadership, model communication and value all members of the school community.

    Buchanan Elementary will be committed to working in collaborative teams to build a school of high performance learning that fosters personal accountability. The staff members will be knowledgeable, life-long learners who model creative problem solving through an interactive, approach to curriculum development, student grouping, and instructional design.

    Buchanan's primary curricular goal will be to provide students with a standards based curriculum that is presented in a meaningful and nurturing environment. Within teaching the academic standards, we will aim to instill high moral standards. We will strive to provide a curriculum that promotes inquiry and discovery, and challenges students to rise to their highest potential. Through the collaboration and support of teachers, parents, and community, students will build foundational skills at each grade level that will provide them with the building blocks of literacy, numeracy, thinking skills and social skills so that they may feel confident as both learners and contributors in our ever changing society.

    Buchanan will be committed to providing a safe, warm, child-centered learning environment. Staff and parents focus on building future citizens and leaders. We will model and expect responsible, respectful behavior, and students will be held accountable for their choices. Students will have clear expectations and be rewarded for their efforts and accomplishments.

    Our success will be measured by children demonstrating confidence as individuals while seeking the highest of standards in personal and academic endeavors. Buchanan will be recognized in the community as a place of pride where children come first and learning reaches new heights.
