Dear Curran Families,
Welcome to E. Hale Curran Elementary School, home of the Cougars!
It is with great excitement that I welcome you to the new school year. I am excited because I have the honor of being Principal and Instructional Leader of Curran Elementary, the only STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) focused elementary school in the Murrieta Valley Unified School District. Here at Curran we believe strongly that focusing on STEM disciplines helps prepare students with twenty-first century skills.
This year will bring about many challenges as we start the year in a virtual learning model. While we face these challenges I know mistakes will be made, but remember, Mistakes Allow Thinking to Happen.
Often times students, and even adults, struggle with making mistakes, especially in math. That fear of being wrong will lead to a fixed mindset and belief that one is not good at something, or not smart, which greatly hinders learning. Someone with a fixed mindset will shy away from challenges. Studies show that we learn from mistakes and when one has a Growth Mindset, instead of a fixed mindset, real learning can happen. We believe everyone can learn and everyone can, in time, master math, science, reading and writing concepts and skills, even in a virtual learning model.
At Curran we help students develop a Growth Mindset. Students with a Growth Mindset believe abilities can be developed through hard work and perseverance. The key to creating a Growth Mindset, where mistakes lead to real learning, is by having a community where everyone is respectful, responsible, safe, and kind.
Curran has an incredible, energetic staff that is dedicated to the academic and social/emotional growth of all students. We are here to support our students and families, so please do not hesitate to reach out to your teacher or administration at any time.
For all students to have the best chance for success, parent/guardian engagement is a must. Make sure to read the weekly newsletter as it is the primary way we communicate upcoming events, keep you informed, and share opportunities to get involved.
Sincerely,
Greg Lumsden
Principal
