Mr. Brett Bartlett

Welcome to 8th Grade English Language Arts!

Let me begin by sharing the first thing I share with all my students on Day-1, I'm excited to be here! I love teaching and I love the best middle school in Murrieta, Shivela Baby!

Throughout the year, we will immerse students in the four California State Standards for the ELA domain: Language, Reading Informational Texts, Reading Literature, and Speaking and Listening. My goal is to sharper my students' minds and skills through writing, vocabulary, literary analysis, reading comprehension, and presentations/debates.

The course objectives are to ensure that by the end of the year, all students:

  1. Understand and appreciate various genres of literature.
  2. Improve their vocabulary, literary analysis, and reading comprehension.
  3. Develop their abilities to write for specific purposes.
  4. Enhance their speaking and listening skills.

To be successful in my classroom, students should be prepared to try and fail, I am more concerned about growth than perfection. They should bring their planners, writing notebooks (I prefer composition notebooks but a spiral notebook will also suffice), and their student IDs. They should leave their phones silenced or turned off and in their backpacks unless told otherwise. Finally, they should be willing to take ownership for their success and failures.
