Board of Education / About the Board

The Board of Education is the governing body of the Murrieta Valley Unified School District. It is an elected five-member entity, with each individual board member serving a four-year term. Each Board Member is elected according to Trustee Areas, established in 2018. The map was updated in 2022 based upon U.S. Census Data.

The only legal requirement for an individual seeking to become a Board member is that he or she be registered to vote and reside within their respective trustee area. School board members are entrusted with governing the 11 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, 3 comprehensive high schools, and 4 alternative education schools (Learn@Home virtual/independent/homeschool academy, grades TK-8; Murrieta Canyon Academy, grades 9-12; Murrieta Summit Adult Transition and Murrieta Valley Adult School). The main responsibilities of the Board of Education include:

Setting district policy

Establishing district goals

Ensuring that the district is compliant with Federal, State, and local requirements

Approving a budget that prioritizes the established goals and maintaining contractual relationships with the Murrieta Educators Association and the California School Employees Association.

Authority is granted to the board as an entity, not each member individually. Therefore, board members fulfill these responsibilities by working together as a governance team with the Superintendent to make decisions that will best serve all the students in the community. The Board of Education appoints the Superintendent of Schools. The Superintendent serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the District. The Superintendent is also the Secretary to the Board of Education and prepares Board agendas as well as maintains its records and files.

The Board meets on the second Thursday of each month at 5:00 p.m. at the District Support Center at 41870 McAlby Court, unless otherwise posted. Special Board of Education meetings may also be scheduled to address issues as they arise.

The Board agenda is posted at the District Support Center near the front entrance and online 72 hours prior to the meeting.

Agendas for Special Board meetings are posted at least 24 hours prior to the Board meeting.
